10 Things You Absolutely MUST Do on Your Kicking Horse Trip

Like the town of Golden itself, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is a true year-round destination. While there's no question the "Champagne Powder Capital of Canada" is renowned for its epic winter skiing and snowboarding, this mountain playground offers something for every kind of adventurer in every season. Whether you're here for the winter thrills, looking for summertime Golden activities, or something in between, stick around while we share the top things to do in Golden on your next visit to Kicking Horse.

1. Dine at Eagle's Eye Restaurant

At 2,347 meters (7,700 feet), Eagle’s Eye Restaurant really earns its nickname as the highest restaurant in Canada. And in this case, it’s as much about the journey as the destination. To reach this stunning spot perched atop the Purcell Mountains, you’ll need a reservation and a scenic lift ride up the mountain. Enjoy lunch, après, or dinner on Fridays and Saturdays (and, of course, jaw-dropping views of countless peaks) during ski season and in summer and early fall.

2. Hit the Trail

Golden is a paradise for hikers, with hundreds of trails for every skill level. Families and beginner hikers love the Golden Rotary Trail, Wapta Falls, Hemlock Grove in nearby Glacier National Park and Confluence Park Trail. For more of a challenge, try Thompson Falls or Cedar Camp Trail, or tackle Kicking Horse Mountain, where gondola-access hiking opens up ski runs transformed into over 100 summer trails.

Insider tip: Spring and early summer are prime times for chasing waterfalls, roaring with snowmelt. In the fall, larch season brings brilliant gold to trails in nearby national parks like Yoho and Kootenay.

3. ...or the Water

For many, Golden’s bodies of water are just as exciting as its trails. From late spring well into autumn, you can paddle around tranquil Emerald, Reflection, or Cedar lakes, or explore the calmer wetland sections of the Columbia River. We touch on it in more detail later but be sure to check out a paddleboard from the concierge at Kicking Horse Lodging!

Adrenaline seekers, you'll want to set your sights on the Kicking Horse River with its legendary Class III and IV rapids. To get the full experience, book a whitewater rafting tour with a local guide. Looking for something a bit calmer? Opt for a scenic river float instead.

4. ...or the Slopes

With over 3,400 acres of skiable terrain, insane vertical (over 1,315 meters, or 4,310 feet!), five thrilling bowls, endless chutes, famously light, dry snow, and an extra long season, Kicking Horse Mountain is a winter sports mecca. It’s a magnet for thrill-seekers, with over half of its runs rated as advanced and expert, but there are plenty of green and blue runs for beginners and intermediates, too—plus lessons and avalanche safety courses for first-timers.

5. Come Face-to-Face with Wild Animals

All year, Golden offers unique opportunities to see wildlife up close. The Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre educates visitors on the importance of keeping wolves in the ecosystem through interactive daily tours. You can even book a Wolf Walk for a (much) more intimate experience, not to mention one of the most unforgettable things to do in Golden. Note that the wolf centre is strictly cash-only, and participants must be 16 and up for the wolf walks.

On Kicking Horse Mountain during the summers, you can meet Boo the bear at the Grizzly Bear Refuge, a 20-acre preserve accessible via the Catamount Chairlift. Interpretive tours offer rarely-seen insights into Boo’s life and habitat.

6. Walk Across the Highest Suspension Bridge in Canada

Suspended in a canyon 426 feet above the Columbia River Valley, the Golden Skybridge offers breathtaking views...and we mean that literally—you just may feel your breath catch as you step out! After all, this is Canada’s highest suspension bridge! Aside from the bridge itself, you can enjoy even more thrills, including ziplining, the Railrider Mountain Coaster, axe-throwing, a rock climbing wall, and even a canyon swing. The Skybridge is open about half the year, closing in the winter and spring.

7. Be a Musher for a Day

Dog sledding is a quintessential Canadian winter adventure, and this is easily one of the most sought-after Golden activities. Outfitters like Golden Adventure Tours and Kingmik Dog Sled Tours offer fully immersive, bucket-list-worthy dogsled experiences, including opportunities to mush your own team of huskies. In just a few hours, you'll glide over frozen, snow-covered landscapes, spot wildlife, learn the ins and outs of this incredible sport, and get to interact with the incredibly impressive pups.

8. Play a Round

In the warmer months, you'd be hard-pressed to find a place to tee off that's more scenic than the Golden Golf Club. Set alongside the Columbia River, this notoriously challenging 18-hole course is framed by soaring mountains and often frequented by local wildlife. The club even has a mini golf course, making it a great outing for the entire family.

9. Explore Nearby National Parks

Golden’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring some of Canada's more underrated national park gems on a half- or full-day trip: Yoho, Kootenay, and Glacier. Just a short drive from Kicking Horse (Kootenay is about 1.5 hours, while the other two are within one hour), these parks offer everything from breathtaking waterfalls and glassy turquoise lakes to world-renowned scenic drives and incredible hiking trails.

10. Embrace Some Downtime on the Mountain

Adventure is certainly abundant, and Kicking Horse Lodging offers plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge. Stay in one of the resort’s three unique properties, each with its own vibe and amenities, and reflect on days well spent. Enjoy perks like ski-in, ski-out access, private hot tubs, fireplaces, and numerous on-mountain dining and shopping options, plus Stay® | Well amenities that include complimentary snowshoes, paddleboards, and trekking poles, among many other things.

However, if you choose to spend your time experiencing the best things to do in Golden, book your stay at Kicking Horse to savour unforgettable moments—on the mountain and off.

A Wild Adventure - Chilling with Golden Wildlife in the Winters

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Kicking Horse Lodging in Golden, BC, is a prime spot for winter wildlife adventures. As the snow blankets the landscape, wildlife activity shifts, giving visitors unique opportunities to observe Golden’s diverse animal kingdom in action.

While you're here, there's no shortage of things to do—from skiing and snowboarding to cozying up after a day in the elements. But if wildlife is what you’re after, winter is a fantastic time to explore the surrounding areas and catch glimpses of local fauna in their natural habitat.

6 Places to Spot Wildlife Around Golden This Winter

Golden’s rugged, stunningly beautiful landscape is a pristine, jaw-dropping backdrop for spotting wildlife—especially when it's blanketed in glistening snow. Remember, though, while it should go without saying, it's crucial to keep a respectful distance from animals. This is just as much as for your safety as theirs.

As a general rule, if you hold your arm out in front of you with your thumb straight up, your thumb should completely cover the animal. If you can still see it, back up farther.

Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre

Wolves are some of the most elusive, fascinating wildlife species known to man. At the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre right here in Golden, however, you get a rare up-close look at the inner workings of a real wolf pack. Don't worry, it's perfectly safe! Fiercely dedicated to wolf conservation and education, the centre offers guided, small-group interpretive tours that let you observe and learn about wolves. For visitors who want more of an in-depth look, consider booking a Walk With Wolves, a very literal "walk on the wild side!" These 1.5-hour walks allow you to walk right alongside the wolves, freely in their habitat. Both the guided tours and wolf walks are offered year-round, and the centre is less than 30 minutes from Kicking Horse Mountain.

Go on an Epic Dog Sledding Adventure

Dog sledding is arguably the best, most unforgettable way to fully immerse yourself in Golden’s winter landscapes. Several local, independently-owned outfitters offer a variety of dog sledding experiences, including options that let you try mushing yourself. Plus, of course, you'll have the opportunity to spot wildlife up close—as you fly past, gliding over the snow and ice!

  • Golden Adventure Tours: Two-hour tours offered in three daily time slots, travelling between Banff and Yoho National Park. Or, try Mushing 101, a 30-minute introductory class that very literally puts you in the 'driver's seat!'

  • Kingmik Dog Sled Tours: Three tours offered daily in the winter through Yoho National Park, which all include a meet and greet with the dog sled team

Harrison Eco Tours

While many of Harrison Eco Tours’ offerings pause during the winter (think kayaking rentals and tours), the Bald Eagle Viewing Boat Tour and Rainbow Falls Tour and Walk continue to run almost every day, year-round. This stretch of the Harrison River is home to the world's largest concentration of bald eagles! Winter is considered prime time to see them, as they flock to the area to feast on spawning salmon (which you'll also get to see on your boat ride, thanks to underwater cameras!).

Radium Hot Springs

Radium Hot Springs might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of wildlife watching but hold that thought. Both the town itself and the hot springs themselves (which share the same name) are surrounded by a designated wildlife corridor. Bighorn sheep, deer, elk, coyotes, and even wolves and mountain lions all frequent this area, making it a top location for spotting a variety of wild animals. The major bonus here is that after some intense wildlife viewing, you can relax in the mineral hot springs, soaking up their recharging warmth while surrounded by natural beauty.

BC Bird Trail

Golden sits in the Columbia Valley, near the Columbia Wetlands, a critical habitat for birds year-round. In winter, certain bird species are easier to spot due to the lack of tree cover, and you’ll have plenty of peaceful viewing points along the BC Bird Trail. The area is home to over 260 bird species, including bald eagles, so be sure to bring your binoculars and watch for seasonal residents and migratory birds alike.

Take a Day Trip to Yoho National Park

Just a 20-minute drive from Kicking Horse Lodging, Yoho National Park is a picture-perfect winter wonderland that offers exceptional outdoor adventures—wildlife spotting opportunities being one of the best. While many park services shut down in the winter, including many trails, park roads, and visitor centres, some areas of the park remain open to those prepared for the conditions. Here, you may catch sight of deer, elk, moose, or wolves. Expect heavy snow and unpredictable weather, so if you visit, come prepared to be mostly self-reliant. Before heading into the park, check which trails and roads are open on the official Parks Canada website

Choose Kicking Horse Lodging for Your Winter Basecamp

Whether you’re hoping to spot wolves, marvel at eagles, or soak in hot springs while you try to find bighorn sheep in the distance, Golden’s winter wildlife scene has something for every nature lover. Kicking Horse Lodging is the perfect jumping-off point, with a location convenient to Golden itself, Banff, and Yoho National Park, a variety of accommodation types, and loads of cozy amenities. Book your stay today, and don't forget the binoculars!

Slide into Winter in Golden, BC: Best Hills, Trails, and Sledding Tips

Golden, BC, situated almost equidistant between Banff and Revelstoke, is renowned for its winter sports. While skiing and snowboarding (understandably!) get most of the spotlight, there's another side to this spectacular mountain playground that doesn’t require strapping into a snowboard or pair of skis: sledding. Or snowmobiling, as some people know it.

Whether you’re looking to take a break between runs or aren’t a skier at all and simply want to check out some other Golden activities, the diverse, vast terrain offers fantastic sledding opportunities, with over 240 kilometers of trails across four maintained areas and 13 distinct sledding zones. Just like the ski scene here, there’s truly a challenge for every experience level, from family-friendly groomed trails to steep alpine hills.

Here, we share everything you need to know about where and how to go sledding in and around Golden.

Best Places to Go Sledding in Golden

The sledding areas in this natural playground are as varied as they are scenic. From gentle rides through forested trails to high-alpine bowls with BIG views, here are the top Golden spots to get your snowmobile adventure started.

Quartz Creek

54 km/42 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

By far one of Golden’s most popular sledding destinations—perhaps THE most popular, Quartz Creek is known for its massive wide-open meadows, rolling terrain, and three bowls. The area is exceptionally well-maintained and features groomed trails that make it perfect for families and beginners (in fact, most of the local rental companies send first-timers out here!), but it also has more challenging spots and a ton of terrain for those looking for more adventure.

Westbench

33 km/52 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

This area offers gentle terrain at a lower elevation and is ideal for families and beginner riders looking for a relaxed, scenic ride. Westbench is a go-to for introductory lessons, breaking in new sleds, and when conditions are too risky at higher elevations.

Blaeberry

30 km/27 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

Located west of Golden, Blaeberry offers a mix of groomed trails and off-piste areas, making it ideal for all skill levels. Beginners will love the laid-back cruise through snowy forests, while more advanced riders can seek out steeper slopes for some powder play.

Silent Pass

51 km/41 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

Aptly named Silent Pass is something of a local secret, as the trail often has fresh, untouched powder when other areas do not. A beginner-friendly groomed trail takes you most of the way to Silent Pass itself, and it's easy enough to turn back for people who aren't comfortable crossing the pass.

Gorman Lake

33 km/52 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

For more skilled riders chasing that next major dose of adrenaline, Gorman Lake is the place to go. The trail to Gorman climbs steadily and offers access to wide bowls and technical terrain, delivering jaw-dropping alpine scenery to boot. Riders can also access East Quartz from here.

East Quartz

54 km/42 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

A quieter option next to bustling Quartz Creek, East Quartz is more remote—and significantly more challenging. The gorgeous bowls attract experienced sledders, but beware that you'll pass multiple avalanche paths. It's crucial to be familiar with avalanche safety before playing in this particular area.

Old Man

52 km/44 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

Another maintained area near Quartz Creek, Old Man is one of the newer places to sled in Golden. It's a favourite among local sledders, known for its steep, technical climbs and panoramic views.

Chatter Creek

40 km/34 minutes from Kicking Horse Resort

Chatter Creek offers a mix of groomed trails and off-piste areas, making it a good option for both beginners and experienced riders. Just north of Golden, this area is known for its particularly deep snow and stunning scenery.

Kicking Horse Sledding Tips

Now that you know where to go, you're probably ready to hit the trails, but it’s crucial to be prepared and stay safe. Sledding around Golden can take you to some remote high-altitude areas, so here are a few key tips to keep in mind before setting out.

  • Always check the local weather forecast before heading out. In high-elevation alpine environments, storms can form quickly and roll in out of nowhere. You don’t want to be caught in a snowstorm with no visibility or risk getting stranded.

  • Familiarize yourself with avalanche safety and check local predictions. Avalanches are extremely dangerous, so this is not something to take lightly. Make sure to educate yourself on how to avoid triggering one and how to spot them, and always check the local avalanche forecast before you ride. Avalanche Canada is a great place to start.

  • Bring emergency supplies. High-altitude weather is unpredictable, so it’s always best to be over-prepared. Carry extra food, water, a basic first aid kit, and a satellite communication device in case you run into an emergency situation.

  • Wear appropriate safety gear. Helmets and extra layers are essential when sledding, but you should really also wear an avalanche beacon, especially if you’re venturing into more remote or challenging terrain.

Where to Get on a Sled in Golden

If you don’t have your own gear or you're visiting from out of town, no problem! Several companies in Golden rent snowmobiles and all the other gear you'll need to ride safely. Check out Rocky Mountain Riders and Golden Snowmobile Rentals and Tours.

Alternatively, you could also consider booking a guided tour. This is likely new-to-you terrain, on a new machine in a new place. Some people feel more comfortable with a guide who knows the area, and Golden has several outfitters that offer guided snowmobiling tours. In most cases, you don't need any prior experience, making this one of the best things to do in Golden with kids.

Spend the Thanksgiving Long Weekend in Kicking Horse - Things to Do With Your Family

Thanksgiving weekend, the second Monday in October, is the perfect time for a family escape to relax and soak in the beauty of the mountains before winter sets in. Whether you're looking for outdoor adventure, wildlife encounters, or relaxing downtime, Kicking Horse Lodging in Golden, BC, is the ideal home base.

From exploring stunning views to venturing into nearby Yoho National Park, you'll find plenty of ways to entertain the whole family. Here’s a sample itinerary for an unforgettable long Thanksgiving weekend in Kicking Horse.

Quick note: this itinerary assumes most visitors will arrive late in the day or evening Friday, and/or depart fairly early Monday morning. Of course, feel free to mix and match days and Golden activities to best suit your schedule.

Day 1: Explore Golden

After a day of travel and settling into your accommodation at Kicking Horse Lodging the night before, you should be ready to hit the ground running and make the most of your first full day in Golden.

Morning: Golden Skybridge

The Golden Skybridge, just 20 minutes from the resort, is Canada’s highest suspension bridge. Open through the Thanksgiving weekend before closing for the season, this thrilling attraction will wow the whole family. Walking across the bridge, stretched across a dramatic canyon with views of the surrounding Columbia Valley, is one of the best things to do in Kicking Horse, but it's only the beginning. You'll also find a kid-friendly adventure park with a mountain coaster, zipline, ropes courses, canyon swing, and more.

Afternoon: Explore Downtown Golden

After the Skybridge, head back to Golden for a relaxing afternoon. It's a small but ultra-charming downtown, and you'll want to pop into most, if not all, of the shops and galleries. The Golden Museum is a must for some insight into the area's rich history, and as far as food and drinks, you really can't go wrong anywhere. Here are some of our top suggestions.

Optional add-on: If you're up for it and the weather is favourable, take a quick drive to admire Thompson Falls. Hiking the 7-kilometer trail is one of the most popular things to do in Kicking Horse, but the falls are also accessible by vehicle.

Evening: Relax and Take in the Views

Take it easy in the evening after a day jam-packed with adventure. Grab some dinner from one of Golden’s restaurants or, if you prefer, whip something up in your lodging. Most of the accommodation options at Kicking Horse have full kitchens! The mountain is quiet and peaceful during the shoulder season, giving you a chance to recharge and simply enjoy being in nature. Take advantage of the lack of crowds and indulge in a hot tub soak, either on the lodge grounds or in your suite or cabin. If you're feeling energetic, stroll the resort grounds and take in the last of the fall colours.

Day 2: Yoho National Park Adventure

This spectacular, highly underrated Canadian national park is less than 40 minutes from Kicking Horse and about 20 minutes from Golden—perfectly convenient for exploring on a day trip. A huge perk of visiting over Thanksgiving weekend (aside from the gorgeous scenery, of course!) is that all the summer crowds are long gone.

Insider tip: before heading out, stop by the front desk at Kicking Horse Lodging to pick up complimentary hiking essentials such as bear bells, trekking poles, and binoculars, all part of our Stay® | Well amenities.

Day Trip to Yoho National Park

You'll find countless must-see's in Yoho National Park (so many that we wrote an entire guide dedicated to visiting!). To make it easier to plan out your quick visit, here are some highlights.

  • Iconic Emerald Lake, which is stunning with its reflective waters even in the fall.

  • Natural Bridge is an easy stop with a short walk that takes you over an impressive rock formation sculpted by the Kicking Horse River (a family-friendly hike)

  • Wapta Falls

  • Takakkaw Falls, one of Canada’s highest waterfalls, for a bigger adventure. Though the road to the falls closes in winter, it’s usually still open during Thanksgiving weekend, making it a great time to visit before the snow settles in.

Optional Add-on: Northern Lights Wolf Centre

You may very well want to spend the entire day exploring Yoho National Park, but if you want to check out another one of the best things to do in Kicking Horse, detour to the Northern Lights Wolf Centre before heading back to the hotel. This unique experience gives your family the chance to learn about and even interact with wolves in a natural setting. Family interpretive tours are just 25 minutes, so it's easy to fit this unique, educational activity into your Thanksgiving weekend itinerary.

Evening: Unwind

End the day with some well-earned downtime. If you're feeling like a cozy night in, grab dinner to-go in town, then curl up by a fire or relax in a hot tub (or both!). Up for some nightlife? Head to Rockwater Bar & Grille in Golden for cocktails and live music.

Day 3: Light Sightseeing Before Departure

The last day of your Thanksgiving weekend trip will largely depend on your travel plans. At the very least, try to fit in a leisurely walk and a light breakfast at one of the fabulous cafes in Golden. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Bluebird Café previously, stop by on your way out of town.

Take a Scenic Walk

Before you pack up and head out, take one last chance to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and crisp mountain air. Trails both at the resort and around town are quiet this time of year, providing an excellent opportunity to spot wildlife. Some of our recommendations for short, easy hikes around Kicking Horse Mountain and Golden include:

  • Kicking Horse pedestrian bridge

  • Confluence Park Trail

  • Golden Rotary Loop trail

  • Cedar Camp Trail, part of the Moonraker trail system

A Thrill Seeker's Guide to Fall Adventures in Golden, BC

Golden, British Columbia, has long been known as a natural playground for thrill seekers, and fall is the perfect season to explore its many natural wonders and adventures. As the leaves change colour, the temperature drops, and the summer crowds dwindle, the options for thrilling things to do in the fall are endless.

Whether you're hiking, biking, rafting, or (literally!) soaring through the sky, the memories you create in Golden will last a lifetime. And with Kicking Horse Lodging as your basecamp, you'll have everything you need to stay safe and comfortable.

Hiking and Backpacking

Ask just about anyone, draw or visitor, and you'll hear that the renowned hiking is one of the biggest Golden activities that draws people to this small mountain town. It's difficult to find a trail that isn't stunning but fall adds a whole new layer of magic. Cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and vibrant autumn colours...what's not to love? There's no shortage of options for every skill level, but some of the most popular 'adventurous' (i.e., more challenging) trails include Canyon Creek Loop, Terminator Ridge at Kicking Horse Mountain, and Mount 7.

Before you hit the trails, stop by the front desk at Kicking Horse Lodging for complimentary bear bells, bug spray, trekking poles, and even child hiking carriers. These are all part of our Stay® | Well amenities, one of the perks that makes us one of the best accommodations in Golden.

Mountain Biking

Perhaps even more so than hiking, Golden's mountain biking scene is epic. Between the 100-plus kilometres of singletrack trails, the downhill network on famous Mount 7, and the mountain bike park at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, there's plenty of diversity in terms of both terrain and challenge.

Autumn is an ideal time for this fast-paced sport favoured by adrenaline junkies, with cooler weather making the climbs more bearable and the trails far less crowded. If you need a bike while you're in town, head to the Performance Rental Centre at Kicking Horse Mountain.

Whitewater Rafting

The Kicking Horse River is renowned for its wild rapids, and the best way to fully appreciate their power is to get out on the water! Although the whitewater rafting season winds down by the end of September, if you time it right, this can be one of the more unique thrilling things to do in the fall. The 'golden' foliage (pun very much intended!) provides a striking backdrop to the sparkling turquoise water, making this especially Instagram-worthy, also.

Local outfitters including Glacier Raft Company, Wild Water Adventures, and Alpine Rafting all offer a variety of guided trips. And if you're visiting Golden as a family, most of them have at least a couple of beginner-friendly trips for the little ones.

Rock Climbing

Climbing is easily one of the lesser-known Golden activities. Not because it's not incredible, but because the area is simply more well-known for its hiking, biking, river recreation, and snow sports. Popular climbing spots include Spillimacheen Crags (AKA "Spilli Rock"), Bugaboo Provincial Park, Yoho National Park, and Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or just starting out, local guides like BC Mountain Guides and Alpine Odyssey can help you find the perfect route. Serious thrill seekers can even take courses in mountaineering and ice climbing.

Need your climbing fix even when the weather is terrible? Check out Confluence Climbing or Dirtbag Climbing Corporation, Golden's two indoor climbing gyms. Bonus: they're both less than 15 minutes from Kicking Horse Lodging.

Zip Lining

For a different kind of thrill (one suitable for even the youngest adrenaline junkies!), head to Golden SkyBridge, home to a spectacular 1,000-foot-long zipline. The heart-pounding ride is a blast, and the best part is that you don't need any special skills or experience. Of course, the SkyBridge itself is one of the highest in Canada, spanning across the gorge 426 feet high. Then there's the canyon swing, ropes course, mountain coaster, and more. With the birds'-eye view and colourful scenery, these are all especially thrilling things to do in the fall!

Note: Golden Skybridge closes for the season in mid-October.

Paragliding and Hang Gliding

Golden’s stunning landscapes and ideal wind conditions make it a mecca for paragliding and hang gliding. When you picture soaring high above multiple mountain ranges, two wild rivers, and the expansive Columbia River valley, it's easy to see why! And when you toss in beautiful colour-changing foliage, you can imagine that it's one of the most thrilling things to do in the fall.

This scenic mountain town is also home to one of the world's top five gliding launch pads, Mount 7. Notably, many locals hike up to Mount 7 to watch the gliders when they're looking for what to do in Golden.

Local outfitters Altitude Adventures, Free Bird Hang Gliding, and Golden Paragliding offer tandem flights for beginners, as well as lessons and advanced courses for those looking to eventually fly solo. Adrenaline junkies seeking an even bigger thrill may want to try skydiving. Skydive Extreme Yeti offers tandem jumps for an unparalleled rush.

Wildlife Viewing

Fall is one of the best times, if not THE best time, for spotting wildlife in Golden. As summer crowds disperse, animals become more active, plus their activity level ramps up in preparation for the dormant winter. Common sightings include elk, deer, moose, black bears and the occasional grizzly, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, coyotes, and countless bird species.

You never know where you'll encounter a wild animal, so grab a pair of binoculars at Kicking Horse Lodging before heading out (another one of our Stay® | Well perks!). With a bit of patience and luck, you’ll have the opportunity to see some of Canada’s iconic wildlife in their natural habitat.

Explore Nearby Yoho National Park

Located less than 40 minutes from Kicking Horse Lodging and 20 minutes from Golden, Yoho National Park is a must-visit for every adventurer. The park is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the Rockies, including famous Emerald Lake and towering Takakkaw Falls. Fall is the ideal time to explore, with fewer crowds and a landscape of jewel tones offering unforgettable hiking, paddling, rock climbing, and wildlife watching.

Wrapping Up

Whether you're tackling the rapids, exploring the skies, or conquering rugged terrains, the diverse activities available ensure there's never a dull moment. Embrace the crisp fall air, the stunning landscapes, and the welcoming community that make Golden, BC, an essential destination for your next adventure.

So, gear up and get ready to make unforgettable memories this fall. Golden, BC, is calling all thrill seekers to immerse themselves in the ultimate seasonal escapade. Are you ready to answer?

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Yoho National Park, The Hiker's Paradise

For outdoor enthusiasts seeking jaw-dropping views, tranquil lakes, and one of the best places to hike in the Rockies, Yoho National Park is the ultimate destination. Nestled on the western slopes of the Continental Divide and minutes from Banff National Park, Yoho is a hiker's paradise, with similar views and just as much epic adventure—but far fewer crowds. Whether you're an avid hiker or someone who simply appreciates Mother Nature, this guide will help you plan your perfect trip to Yoho National Park.

Where is Yoho National Park?

Yoho National Park is in southeastern British Columbia, near the Alberta border. It's a short 20-minute drive from all sorts of fun Golden activities and about 35 minutes from Kicking Horse Lodging. Interestingly, Yoho shares boundaries with two other national parks: Banff to the east and Kootenay to the south.

Best Time of Year to Visit Yoho National Park

Open all year, Yoho National Park offers unique experiences in each season. The best time to visit, though, largely depends on the specific activities you have planned.

For hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the lakes, July through September is ideal—although late June and early October are also excellent in some years. During these months, the weather is warmer, trails are (generally) snow-free, and most park facilities and roads are open. The caveat, of course, is that everyone wants to take advantage of this season, so the park can get quite crowded.

Fall, specifically mid-September into early October, ushers in stunning, colourful foliage and fewer crowds, making it a great time for photography, quieter hikes, and wildlife watching.

Winter enthusiasts will find Yoho equally enchanting from December to March when the park transforms into a magical, snowy wonderland. This time of year is perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing, a wonderful complement to hitting the slopes at Kicking Horse.

Spring, although less predictable in terms of weather, offers the distinct advantage of experiencing the park’s waterfalls at peak flow, thundering as the snow melts.

Admission, Fees & Passes

Yoho National Park is open year-round, and peak season is July and August. All visitors need to either pay daily admission ($11 for adults, $22 per family or group, and free for children 17 and under) or have a valid Parks Canada Discovery Pass. If you plan to visit other national parks throughout the year, the annual Discovery Pass offers excellent value and grants access to over 80 Parks Canada sites.

Best Things to Do in Yoho National Park

Emerald Lake

One of Yoho’s crown jewels, aptly-named Emerald Lake, lives up to all the hype. Towering peaks and lush forest surround its stunning, glassy turquoise waters, creating a setting straight off of a postcard. Canoeing on Emerald Lake is one of the most popular things to do in the park, and there's also a beginner-friendly 5.2-kilometer (3.2 miles) loop trail around the lake with non-stop incredible views. The effort-to-reward ratio on the Emerald Lake trail is tremendous, making it one of the best places to hike in Yoho for all skill levels.

Natural Bridge

Another appropriately-named feature in Yoho National Park, the Natural Bridge, is a fascinating rock formation carved out by the Kicking Horse River. It's close to Emerald Lake, so make it a quick photo stop before or after hiking around the lake.

Takakkaw Falls

The second-tallest waterfall in Canada and the tallest in Yoho, 373-meter "Tak Falls" is a must-see. With its dramatic two-tier drop, the 'main' one being 254 meters tall, the cascade is especially impressive in late spring and early summer. An easy 1.4-kilometer (1.1 miles) hike from the parking lot brings you to the base of the falls, where you can feel the mist and hear the thunderous roar of the water. Along the pleasant trail, there are also typically several other small, unnamed cascades flowing.

If you're looking for a longer hike, the 8-kilometer (5 miles) round-trip trail to Laughing Falls also starts in the Takakkaw Falls parking lot.

Drive Yoho Valley Road

Yoho Valley Road is a famous 17-kilometer (10.5 miles) scenic, narrow, and winding road with direct access to some of the park’s most beautiful spots, including Takakkaw Falls. Just doing the drive is one of the best things to do in the park in its own right, as it offers a front-row seat to incredible scenery...and a bit of a white-knuckle adventure on certain turns. Along the way, you’ll also find several hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging treks.

Note that Yoho Valley Road is only open in the summer and early fall, typically closing for the season in October and re-opening in mid-June.

Wapta Falls

Wapta Falls serves as a perfect counterpoint to Takakkaw Falls. Where Tak Falls is tall, Wapta is ultra-wide (nearly 150 meters!), creating a powerful curtain-like waterfall. Hiking the 4.8-kilometer (3 miles) round-trip trail through a shady, forested path leads to the falls, a rewarding yet family-friendly excursion. The viewpoint at the end offers a stunning panorama of the falls and the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect spot for a picnic or photography.

Lake O'Hara

Many people consider Lake O'Hara one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The pristine alpine lake is surrounded by truly stunning scenery, but there's a catch—it's challenging to access. Visitors must either hike in (11 kilometers one way down the gravel road) or score a highly sought-after shuttle bus reservation. These reservations are made by random lottery drawings, with the 'application period' open in March each year and drawings in early April. If you can actually get to Lake O'Hara, you'll immediately see why it's one of the best places to hike anywhere.

With so much to see and do, Yoho National Park truly is a hiker's paradise and an overall unforgettable destination. Whether you take a day trip to hit the highlights or plan several days in the park to thoroughly explore, Kicking Horse Lodging makes an ideal basecamp. Book your stay today, and discover not only the magic of this incredible park but also what to do in Golden any time of year.

A Wave of Fun - All About Kicking Horse River Whitewater Rafting

If you're looking for an exhilarating summer adventure in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, look no further than whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River. With an incredibly scenic backdrop and rapids that cater to all experience levels (yes, even beginners and children!), river rafting in Golden, BC, belongs high on your bucket list

Whether you’re a novice paddler or a seasoned expert chasing big whitewater, the Kicking Horse River promises fun for everyone. Let’s dive into exactly what makes this river a must-visit rafting destination.

The Kicking Horse River 101

Originating from the Wapta Icefield in the Canadian Rockies (more specifically, in spectacular Yoho National Park), the Kicking Horse River is a designated Canadian Heritage River. This means it's recognized for its outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational heritage. The Kicking Horse is particularly renowned for its powerful flow and stunning scenery, attracting adventurers from all over the globe. Speaking of its powerful flow, the river got its name in 1858 when a horse kicked a doctor in the chest on one of the earliest expeditions while they attempted to cross the fast-moving water.

As it carves through the rugged canyon, the Kicking Horse River picks up speed and velocity, creating a wide variety of rafting experiences along the way. Enjoy gentle family floats in the Upper Canyon and battle some of the most intense rapids in Canada in the Lower Canyon.

Rapids for Every Rafter

One of the main things that makes river rafting in Golden, BC, so popular is the diversity of the Kicking Horse River. On a relatively small stretch of this impressive, super scenic river, you'll find rapids ranging from calm and beginner-friendly (Class I) to heart-pumping, true white water (Class IV).

Upper Canyon: Beginner to Intermediate

The upper section of the Kicking Horse River is perfect for families with children and those new to whitewater rafting. You’ll encounter primarily Class I and Class II rapids, really more of a leisurely scenic float with a few occasional splashes. These rapids are gentle yet exciting, offering not only a fun and safe introduction to rafting but also a wonderful way to enjoy the stunning surroundings. These sections of the river also generally include calm stretches where you can literally sit back and relax while taking in the views—or capturing them for Instagram!

Middle Canyon: Intermediate to Advanced

If you have a bit of previous rafting experience under your belt and you're looking for more of a challenge, consider a trip through the Middle Canyon of the Kicking Horse River. This section features mostly Class II and Class III rapids, with a thrilling one-kilometre stretch of Class IV. You'll encounter bigger waves and navigate through more technical rapids with names like Man Eater and Room of Doom. A rafting trip here is one of the best Golden activities for people who want to test pushing their limits while also still maintaining a margin of safety.

Lower Canyon: Expert

Well-known as "the biggest whitewater in western Canada," the Kicking Horse River's Lower Canyon is for seasoned rafters and adrenaline junkies. This section, full of primarily Class IV rapids with the potential for a few Class V, is truly not for beginners or the faint of heart. The powerful currents and challenging drops require skill and precision, making it the ultimate bucket list-worthy whitewater rafting experience for adrenaline junkies.

To clarify, while the Rapid Classification System goes up to Class VI, the Kicking Horse River does not have any of these rapids. At least not on the sections that local outfitters guide rafting trips on!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is whitewater rafting safe?

Absolutely! The mighty Kicking Horse River has sections that are perfect for beginners and families, particularly the upper canyon with its gentle Class I and II rapids. Regardless of which local company you choose for river rafting in Golden, you'll be led by a professional guide who knows the river like the back of his or her hands. Even on the most adventurous tours, the primary goal is for all participants to have a safe and enjoyable experience.

What should I wear rafting?

Comfort and safety are key. Avoid cotton and, instead, wear quick-drying clothing like wool or synthetic blends. While it may be tempting to wear shorts or swimwear, keep in mind that the water is extremely cold year-round (remember, it comes from an ice field!). Many outfitters provide wetsuits, booties, and, for more advanced rafting trips, helmets.

What company should we book with?

Kicking Horse Lodging recommends three Golden whitewater rafting companies. All three are small, locally-owned businesses that really prioritize the guest experience. And in fact, they all work closely with one another! Each company offers unique rafting trips, so the best strategy is to choose one that resonates with your group's experience level and preferences.

  • Alpine Rafting: Gentle family rafting starting at age four, up to full-day heli-rafting trips that include 22 kilometres of pure whitewater and a helicopter ride into otherwise inaccessible sections of the Lower Canyon. Many trips also include riverside BBQ lunch.

  • Glacier Raft Company: Not to be confused with the outfitter of the same name in Glacier National Park, Montana, this family-run business operates five different rafting tours down the river, including some exclusive routes and heli-rafting.

  • Wild Water Adventures: A top Kicking Horse River outfitter since 1992, Wild Water offers five rafting trips plus a range of 'add-ons,' including hiking, sightseeing, Via Ferrata adventures, and more.

Where is the best place to stay for river rafting in Golden?

Kicking Horse Lodging is the ideal basecamp for experiencing whitewater rafting—and everything else Golden has to offer in the summer! Just a short trip up the mountain from the put-ins along the river, we offer a variety of comfortable accommodations and a range of amenities.

After an exciting day on the water, relax in your cozy lodge-style room or a private cabin. Book your stay—and your whitewater rafting adventure—today!

Top 10 Instagram Worthy Views in Golden BC

Let's be honest — there's not a single 'bad' view in the Rocky Mountains as a whole, and certainly not anywhere in British Columbia. But when it comes to envy-inducing, Instagram-worthy views, specifically in Golden BC, some simply stand out more than others. With its location in the Columbia River Valley and proximity to six pristine national parks, including world-renowned Banff and Jasper, this charming small town delivers huge helpings of stunning scenery (and epic adventure!).

Check out 10 of the best views in Golden BC, all worthy of the 'gram and within an easy drive of Kicking Horse Lodging.

1. Kicking Horse River

Running right through town, Golden's very own Kicking Horse River holds some of the most Instagram-worthy views in the area. It's winding and wild, snaking through the mountains that frame it so perfectly with rugged, snow-capped peaks. Beaverfoot Forest Service Road, east of town, has several panoramic lookouts.

Photography tip: in late summer, following spring runoff from the mountains, the river is a bright, milky, almost impossibly blue color.

2. Thompson Falls

Courtesy of Tourism Golden - Dave Best Photography

Unlike some other Golden attractions on our list, Thompson Falls is a rarely crowded gem. That's right...a little-visited waterfall in British Columbia does indeed exist! This cascade is on the Blaeberry River just outside of town, and you can reach it in any vehicle. An overlook takes you to a spot just above the falls, but if you're up for some adventure, take the moderate 7-mile hike.

Photography tip: the best viewpoint for capturing Thompson Falls in a picture is slightly downstream. Walk away from the falls, then turn and look back toward them from different spots.

3. The Top of Mount 7

Courtesy of Tourism Golden - Dave Best Photography

Visitors don't hear much about Mount 7 unless they're looking for the most extreme types of fun when they think about what to do in Golden—it's best known as a launch point for hang gliding. You can either hike up or drive the road to the top, but be aware that it's a rough, pothole-riddled road (why is it that the roughest roads so often lead to the greatest adventures?!).

Photography tip: head to the launch pad during golden hour, when you'll be able to capture the light sparkling off the Columbia River below.

4. Golden Eagle Express Gondola

Kicking Horse Mountain's scenic gondola whisks you from the base of the mountain up to the summit, over 7,700 feet in elevation (2,347 meters). At the top, simply take in some of the best views in Golden BC or hike one of the many trails.

Photography tip: Pictures snapped during the gondola ride are epic, but to really induce FOMO in your followers, snag a reservation at Eagle Eye Restaurant, perched at the very top of the mountain.

5. Emerald Lake

Nestled inside the underrated Yoho National Park and just 20 minutes from Golden (one hour from Kicking Horse Mountain), Emerald Lake literally looks more like a photo than real life. The glassy, mirror-still lake is accessible year-round, a brilliant turquoise blue in the summer months and freezing solid in the winter.

Photography tip: You can take a trail completely encircling Emerald Lake or rent a canoe to paddle around it. Canoe rentals are available from the summer months through early October.

6. Golden SkyBridge

Courtesy of Tourism Golden - Katie Goldie

Perched exactly 426 feet above the Columbia River Valley, it should come as no surprise that some of Golden's most Instagram-worthy views are found along the Golden SkyBridge. Walk across Canada's highest suspension bridge—if your nerves can handle it, that is, stopping to take in the 360-degree views as you go.

Photography tip: the views from the bridge itself are incredible, but be sure to walk around the property and take pictures of the bridge from a distance, too.

7. Wapta Falls

Another wildly scenic waterfall in Yoho National Park (we told you it's underrated!), Wapta Falls is both impressive and easy to reach. It's no wonder that visiting it is one of the top Golden activities for locals and visitors alike! You can hike right up to the base of the falls and if you're lucky, you may see rainbows formed by the constant mist.

Photography tip: Wapta Falls is along the Kicking Horse River, so to catch them flowing while the water is that ethereal bright, milky blue, visit during late summer.

8. Mummery Glacier

Courtesy of Tourism Golden - Andrew Chaud

If you're up for a bit more of a challenging hike, Mummery Glacier delivers in a big way with far and away some of the best views in Golden BC. Everything about the scenery, and the hike itself, for that matter, is best described as BIG. The mountains and views here somehow make you feel small in the world in a beautiful way.

Photography tip: in the summer, you can see a wall of waterfalls flowing off the mountainside by continuing along the ridgeline when you get to the trail's high point.

9. Whitewater Rafting

Since the river is arguably the most popular (natural) Golden attraction, it makes perfect sense to get ON it to chase some of the best views. Kicking Horse has a well-earned reputation for being a particularly wild river, but there are some calmer stretches, too, so it's suitable even for people who have never rafted. Book trips with local outfitter Wild Water Adventures

Photography tip: buy an inexpensive, waterproof phone case to wear around your neck, so you can snap photos along the river without worrying about your expensive electronics.

10. Golden Larches in Autumn

Fall in British Columbia, as a whole, is Instagram-worthy, and that's putting it very mildly. It's a stunning display of jewel-toned colours, changing almost daily beginning in mid- to late September. Although there aren't many great larch hot spots right in town, one of the best Golden activities during this season is seeking them out. Luckily, there are several gram-worthy places within a short one-hour drive.

Photography tip: the closest spots to Golden for photographing larches are Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park (80 kilometers) and Diana Lake in the East Kootenays (90 kilometers).

In Golden, every corner seems to unveil a picture-perfect moment waiting to be captured. From the majestic peaks of the Canadian Rockies to the tranquil reflections on crystal-clear lakes, this town is a haven for photographers and adventurers alike. Rides range from easy to difficult, with wooden features, berms, narrow singletrack, rock slabs, and more fun challenges. The bike park is largely a hidden gem, but those in the know make a beeline here on their summer vacation.

Down in Golden, you'll find another 100 kilometers of trails across three trail systems: Moonrakers, Mountain Shadows, and the CBT Mainline Network. The most experienced riders may also want to try the downhill trail system on Mount 7, originally built for Psychosis, "the steepest, longest, and fastest downhill mountain bike race in the world."

3. Explore Golden from the Water

Experience the Canadian Rockies from a different perspective by taking to the water. Borrow a paddleboard from Kicking Horse Lodging (completely free, one of our Stay® | Well amenities) and paddle around Cedar Lake. Or, if you want to venture out a bit further, rent a kayak or canoe and explore the popular Golden attraction Reflection Lake or the Columbia River's calm waters.

4. Whitewater Rafting

Not-so-calm waters more your speed (literally)? The notoriously wild Kicking Horse River offers another fantastic adventure this summer: whitewater rafting.

Wild Water Adventures and Hydra River Guides both offer several excursions, and there are options suitable for kids ranging up to 'Maximum Horsepower.'

5. Ride the Scenic Gondola

Hop aboard the Golden Eagle Express at Kicking Horse Mountain for breathtaking views and a relaxing ride up to 7,700 feet (2,350 meters). Reservations are highly recommended.

6. Day Trip to Nearby National Parks

This mountain town is surrounded by a whopping six national parks, and naturally, summer vacation is one of the best times to visit them. Test your nerves by walking across the Golden SkyBridge, suspended 426 feet above the canyon floor. That experience alone is one of the best things to do in Golden this summer, but there are several other exciting family attractions onsite. Ride the mountain coaster, fly across the zipline, or tackle the rock-climbing wall or ropes course.

8. Tackle the Via Ferrata

Challenge yourself on Kicking Horse Mountain's Via Ferrata. The iron climbing route is somewhere between technical rock climbing and hiking, using a fixed steel cable as an assist. This one offers three thrilling climbs up the face of Terminator Peak, with route options ranging from 1–3 hours.

As a bonus, the Via Ferrata adventure is all-inclusive, granting access to other popular Golden activities, including the grizzly bear refuge, Eagle's Eye, and disc golf.

9. Get Sky High

With its gorgeous mountain scenery, it comes as no surprise that Golden is highly regarded as one of the best places to paraglide or skydive. From May through October, you can take to the skies with tandem paragliding flights, and best of all, no experience is necessary. Check out Altitude Adventures for this summer's flight offerings.

10 Golden Rules for Visiting Golden, BC

Although more and more visitors discover it all the time, Golden is still largely a rare hidden gem in British Columbia. It's within an easy drive of a whopping six national parks and three mountain ranges, so it goes without saying that outdoor recreation reigns supreme here. However, there's a ton to do and see in all four seasons right in town, too.

Whether you're seeking a tranquil, slow-paced getaway surrounded by breathtaking scenery or a heart-pounding adventure that is more your style, you'll find it all here. When it comes to experiencing all this alpine paradise has to offer, there are a few 'Golden' rules to keep in mind.

1. Kicking Horse Isn't Just a Winter Destination

Kicking Horse isn't just about skiing and snowboarding down powdery slopes in the winter—although there is plenty of that! Come summertime, the mountain transforms into a hiking and biking paradise, with a renowned lift-accessible bike park and a maze of trails that wind through the stunning alpine landscape.

You can spend just one hour or multiple days exploring the trails, with everything from easy-going nature walks to technical, white-knuckle-worthy cycling routes. Speaking of the lift, visitors can also take scenic gondola rides up to the summit in the summer.

If you’re looking for an exhilarating experience, try out mountain climbing at Via Ferrata for the amazing views of the Rockies and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. It doesn’t matter if you’re a thrill seeker or just looking to step out of your comfort zone, the experience gives you access to rock climb in a safe environment with iron rugs, harnesses, slide-through carabiner systems, cable pathways, and protective gear.

With your ticket, you get access to their well-reviewed Eagle’s Eye Restaurant, hiking trails, disc golf, and the Grizzly Bear Refuge.

2. Hitting the Trails is a Must

You'll find another extensive network of trails in Golden itself, with options for hikers of all levels. Chase waterfalls along the Thompson Falls Trail, stroll the serene Confluence Park Trail or wander alongside the Kicking Horse River on the Golden Rotary Trail. Plus, with Yoho National Park just a 30-minute drive away, the hiking possibilities are endless on your vacation in Golden.

3. ...So is Teeing Off

There's just one golf course in Golden, but it packs a big punch. The 18-hole championship Golden Golf Club sits nestled between the Rockies and the Purcell Mountains, and the Columbia River forms one of its borders. Unsurprisingly, it's widely considered one of the most scenic golf courses in all of BC.

4. Golden is Home to Some of the Country's Best Mountain Biking

With over 185 kilometers of cross-country bike trails and a lift-assisted downhill park at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (open in the summer), Golden is a mecca for mountain bikers. It attracts seasoned riders from all over the world, but it's an equally great place for those just starting out in the sport.

5. You Can Cast a Line Year-round

Our region's pristine rivers—the Columbia and Kicking Horse—and numerous lakes mean fishing is one of the best Golden activities year-round. From fly-fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout to casting for char and giant ling, there's no shortage of angling adventures to try. Even when winter rolls around, you have the opportunity to try your hand at ice fishing.

6. The Golden Skybridge is More Than Just a Bridge

Sure, the Golden Skybridge is the highest suspension bridge in Canada, offering both unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains and an adrenaline-inducing experience. But it's also home to a host of other thrilling activities, from a mountain coaster and ziplines to a free-fall rock swing, rock climbing wall, and more.

7. You Can Experience Genuine Wildlife in Golden

It goes without saying that you'll likely spot some local wildlife on your vacation in Golden BC. However, a couple of unique opportunities in town let you (safely!) get up-close and personal.

For a truly wild experience, visit the Grizzly Bear Refuge on Kicking Horse Mountain or the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre. Both let you observe these majestic creatures while learning about their habitats and important conservation efforts.

At the wolf centre, you can even book a 1.5-hour Wolf Walk, where you can walk right alongside a wolf in its natural environment.

8. Golden's Local Brewery is One of the Best in Canada

There's nothing quite like a crisp, cold beer after a day of mountain adventures, and Golden is lucky to be home to the award-winning Whitetooth Brewing Company. Sample a variety of brews inspired by the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains, including Thread the Needle Witbier and Speed Metal Foreign Extra Stout.

9. There Are Plenty of Indoor Golden Activities, Too

When you need a break from the Great Outdoors or on the occasional rainy day, Golden has you covered with a range of indoor things to do.

Kicking Horse Culture puts on a huge variety of live performances and cultural programs throughout the year, from concerts and dance theatre at the Golden Civic Centre to the annual MasqueParade in the town square. You can also take in a movie at the local theatre or delve into the area's history at the Golden BC Museum.

On other trips, however, you want to stay somewhere that’s comfortable with fabulous views and plenty of amenities.

Golden, B.C., and more specifically, Kicking Horse Resort, is one of those destinations. Whether you visit for ski season or come in the summer to hike, bike, or paddle, you're going to want more than just a basic, no-frills room. Luckily, as one of the top resorts in Golden, Kicking Horse Lodging is anything but basic. With a location right on the mountain, three distinct properties, and loads of premium amenities, including full kitchens and private hot tubs, you'll be looking for excuses to stay in for the day.

Kicking Horse Lodging Accommodation Types

As we mentioned, Kicking Horse Lodging has three different properties, each one with its own unique benefits.

Glacier Mountaineer Lodge

Situated at the base of the Golden Eagle Express Gondola and in the center of the resort's alpine village, Glacier Mountaineer Lodge puts you in the heart of, well, everything. Imagine stepping out onto the balcony of your cozy room or spacious condo and looking out over the resort and at the towering mountains just beyond. Or being literal steps away from some of the most popular on-mountain dining options, including Double Black Cafe, Whitetooth Grill, and Peaks Grill (pop in for après and live music!).

As far as the lodging itself, choose from the simplicity of a traditional queen or king hotel room, or the flexibility of condo suites with 1-3 bedrooms. All the suites come equipped with a full kitchen, private balcony, gas fireplace, and in-suite laundry, plus offer direct access to the lodge's amenities. These include a fitness centre, outdoor hot tub, sauna, steam room, and above-ground parking. Heated underground parking is also available for an additional fee.

Palliser Lodge

If ski-in, ski-out access is high on your priority list, there's really no question about where to stay in Golden. Palliser Lodge is nestled in the forest right alongside the slopes, yet is also just steps from the mountain village—and an easy 15-20 minutes to town. After a thrilling day on the mountain, head straight from the slopes into your cozy accommodation!

This option offers the ideal blend of comfort and proximity to the slopes (and in the summer, trails). Choose from upscale one- or two-bedroom condo suites with full kitchens, laundry, electric fireplaces, and, in some cases, private hot tubs on the balcony. Palliser also has some traditional lodge-style hotel rooms with king beds. Lodge amenities at Palliser include a fitness centre, hot tub, and complimentary indoor parking.

Vacation Rental Homes

For those travelling with a larger group, or simply craving a more secluded mountain retreat, the best accommodations on Kicking Horse are the vacation homes. Booking one of these homes means tranquility and privacy without sacrificing convenience or amenities. Tucked high up on the mountain, away from the hustle and bustle of the resort village, these private luxury townhomes and standalone homes are ideal for families or groups seeking a home-away-from-home experience.

Many of these vacation home rentals feature ski-in, ski-out access, and private hot tubs, a winning combination. Get onto the mountain early and without any hassle, then come back to the house to relax and recharge after a day jam-packed with outdoor adventures.

Choose from the townhome community, Whispering Pines Kicking Horse, or the five-bedroom Chickadee Cottage at Kicking Horse

Whispering Pines

Whispering Pines homes also all have a private hot tub on the deck, gas fireplaces, in-suite laundry, ski storage, and dedicated parking. Units here are privately owned and operate on a self-check-in basis.

For an adrenaline rush that doesn't involve being on your own two feet, consider renting snowmobiles or booking a guided snowmobile adventure. One of the reasons Kicking Horse has such great runs is because the entire Golden region has epic terrain—and slicing through it on a snowmobile is one of the best ways to explore.

A handful of local outfitters provide both guided tours and rentals, including White N' Wild Adventures, Rocky Mountain Riders, and Golden Snowmobile Rentals

Ride the Scenic Gondola

If you're not afraid of heights, this is one of the most relaxing things to do in Golden. And if you are, well, then it's one of the more thrilling activities! Year-round, you can ride the Golden Eagle Express gondola up to the summit, at 2,350 meters (7,700 feet) elevation. You'll get incredible panoramic views, with or without skis.

Note that during ski season, this is the same lift that transports skiers and snowboarders. If you aren't skiing, be sure to ask for a scenic ride ticket.

Since you're up there anyway, see if you can snag reservations or pop in for a meal at Eagle's Eye Restaurant. It's Canada's highest restaurant in elevation, and the views are out of this world. Pro tip: dinner reservations include your gondola tickets.

If you happen to be in Golden during the holiday season, don't miss the Holiday Market. Hosted by the Golden Farmers Market, this festive market is a highly anticipated annual event featuring local crafts, artisanal goods, and holiday treats from over 40 vendors. Kicking Horse Mountain Has Can't Miss Skiing & Snowboarding Adventures

Are you a snow sports enthusiast in search of the ultimate winter getaway? Look no further than Kicking Horse Mountain. Nestled in Golden, British Columbia, in the heart of the Rockies, it doesn't get much better than Kicking Horse Mountain skiing and snowboarding.

The mountain offers epic terrain and scenery, some of the best snow conditions, a long season, a variety of top-notch accommodations, and much more. If your next cold weather escape is on your mind, keep reading to learn why Kicking Horse Mountain should be at the top of your list.

Where is Kicking Horse Mountain?

Just outside the town of Golden, Kicking Horse Mountain is a stone's throw from world-renowned Yoho and Banff National Parks (but without the crowds!). If you're familiar with the Canadian Rockies, you know this means our views of endless snow-covered peaks are truly breathtaking.

For those coming from Calgary, it's 260 kilometres, or 162 miles, from the YYC airport. We're also 1.5 hours north of Radium, home of the famous Radium Hot Springs, and a nine-hour drive from Vancouver.

Kicking Horse Snow Conditions

Okay, you're sold on the location – but what about the snow? When it comes to slope conditions for skiing and snowboarding at Kicking Horse Mountain, you will not be disappointed. With an annual snowfall averaging over 16 feet across about 70 days and an average depth of 52", you can rest assured that you'll have plenty of fresh powder to carve through all season long.

And speaking of powder, did you know that Kicking Horse is widely known as the "Champagne Powder Capital of Canada?" It's true! The mountain's unique geography includes a combination of deep bowls and steep ridges, resulting in a light, dry, and smooth (like champagne!) snow that sticks around for a long time. Powder hounds know this "champagne powder" provides the most thrilling on-slope adventures you'll find anywhere.

Skiing and Snowboarding at Kicking Horse Mountain

Now that you know where we are and the snow situation, let's dive into why Kicking Horse Mountain snowboarding and skiing is superior and how you can take advantage of it.

Diverse Terrain

Kicking Horse Mountain has over 3,400 acres of skiable terrain and 1,315 meters (over 4,310 feet) of vertical, one of the longest in North America. The mountain is famous for its five challenging bowls and seemingly infinite chutes.

It should come as no surprise that this, combined with the famous champagne powder, attracts some of the world's top skiers and adrenaline junkies, but Kicking Horse caters to all skill levels. While 60% of the runs are rated Black Diamond or Double Black Diamond for advanced and expert skiers, the remainder are green (beginner) and blue (intermediate), so anyone can enjoy Kicking Horse Mountain skiing.

Brand new skiers, including children, can take lessons, and outdoor enthusiasts with any level of experience are encouraged to take avalanche safety training offered onsite.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

Beyond hitting the slopes, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has much to offer visitors. Five lifts serve the mountain, including one gondola that takes you from the base to the summit. This world-class resort also has cozy lodges and the Village Plaza, home to various shops, restaurants, and aprés options, as well as outfitters that offer gear rentals and adventure tours. There's even childcare available for children between 18 months and 5 years old.

One of the resort's main attractions, aside from the skiing and snowboarding, is Eagle's Eye Restaurant. Perched at the top of the gondola at 2,347 meters, or 7,700 feet, this is Canada's highest restaurant. Note that it's only open on Friday and Saturday nights and for winter holidays and requires a lift ticket and reservations.

Where to Stay for Kicking Horse Mountain Skiing

Another major perk of hitting the slopes at Kicking Horse this winter is the wide variety of accommodations available. With Kicking Horse Lodging, located right on the mountain, you can choose from three unique options, each catering to different needs and preferences.

  • Glacier Mountaineer Lodge: This option puts you in the heart of all the action in the heart of the village at the base of the gondola. You'll find traditional lodge-style hotel rooms, up to roomy 3-bedroom condos with full kitchens. Onsite amenities include a fitness centre, ski storage, complimentary parking, and outdoor hot tubs.

  • Palliser Lodge: If you're looking for ski-in, ski-out convenience to maximize your Kicking Horse Lodging skiing and snowboarding time, here it is. The hotel rooms and 1-2 bedroom condo suites are situated right along the slopes, with private balconies and kitchens. Many rooms also have private hot tubs on their balcony. 4 Reasons You Should Stay at Kicking Horse Lodging During the Winter

When winter blankets the Canadian Rockies, there's a distinct magic in the air beckoning adventurers and snow sport enthusiasts from near and far. Nestled in the heart of pristine Golden lies Kicking Horse Mountain, a winter wonderland unlike any other. As the snowflakes gently fall and the mountains don their glistening white coats, there's no better place to experience the essence of the season.

The ultimate destination for an enchanting winter escape, Kicking Horse Lodging offers unbeatable access to epic skiing and snowboarding, cozy accommodations, a fantastic dining scene, and so much more. So pack your thermals, grab your skis, and let's discover all the reasons to stay at Kicking Horse Lodging this winter.

Convenient Location

One of the biggest reasons why stay at Kicking Horse Lodging is its proximity to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Whether you stay in our suites or a vacation home, you'll be right on the mountain and enjoy immediate access to the lifts. Simply put on your ski gear and head out your door!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however. There are also many other activities and attractions nearby, including off-slope outdoor pursuits like hiking, ice skating, and tubing. Plus, with the quaint town of Golden just a 15-minute shuttle ride or drive away, you'll also be close to excellent dining, drinking, shopping, museums, and more.

Nearby Winter Activities

Kicking Horse Lodging in winter opens the door – quite literally – to an incredible range of outdoor activities. Of course, the ski resort is the most famous among them, and for good reason. With over 120 trails and a 1,315-metre vertical drop, it’s one of the largest and steepest resorts in North America. The fourth-highest vertical on the continent, to be specific!

And while 60% of the runs cater to advanced skiers, there are plenty of gentler grades for beginners and more casual skiers, too. The resort is especially well-known for its five dramatic terrain bowls, making it a favorite among downhill skiers. However, snowboarders have plenty to love, as well!

Off the slopes, there are several other ways to enjoy the snow. Cross-country skiers will appreciate the beginner-friendly groomed runs through Golden Golf Course. You may also consider driving to stunning Yoho National Park for a greater variety of trails, just 40 minutes from Kicking Horse Lodging.

Looking for a slower pace? Check with the front desk to rent complimentary snowshoes (just one perk of our Stay | Well Amenities program), and head to nearby Cedar Lake.

Adrenaline-seekers may want to hop on a snowmobile and explore over 200 kilometres of trails. Golden is highly regarded for its terrain! Local outfitters offering rentals and guided tours include Snow Peak Rentals, Rocky Mountain Riders, and White n Wild Adventures.

One of the other reasons to stay at Kicking Horse is that the resort also offers lower-key, family-friendly options. Before taking a few laps around the skating rink, fly down the fun tubing and sledding area, located right in the base area. Complemented by music and fire pits, it’s the jolliest escape to spend an evening. One night a week, you can also watch (or take part in!) hockey games.

A Variety of Accommodation

Beyond the fantastic location and unmatched access to winter fun, Kicking Horse Lodging is the most comprehensive accommodation in the area. There are three distinct options: Palliser Lodge, Glacier Mountaineer Lodge, and the Vacation Homes. Each one offers a unique atmosphere and benefits, catering to a variety of needs.

Those seeking as much time on the slopes as possible will want to prioritize Palliser Lodge. With super convenient ski-in, ski-out access, it seamlessly blends in with the mountain surroundings. Not only will you enjoy tremendous views, but select condos also have hot tubs for a relaxing post-skiing soak. Accommodations range from traditional hotel-like guest rooms with a king bed to one- or two-bedroom suites with fully-furnished kitchens and balconies. There's also a fitness centre, underground parking, and ski storage.

Alternatively, the Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is at the heart of the resort. Located right at the base of the gondola, the hotel offers a true respite from everyday hustle and bustle. It’s loaded with amenities, including a sauna for soothing sore muscles, a shared hot tub, and a fitness centre. The lodge is next to Kicking Horse Plaza, with various dining and shopping options. Rooms run the gamut from traditional guest rooms to three-bedroom suites – pets are welcome, too!

Finally, there are self-contained vacation homes for independent travellers and those seeking even more tranquility. A bit removed from the main village, these properties are ideally set up for romantic getaways or making family memories. They have patios with hot tubs, spacious living areas, fully-equipped kitchens, and fireplaces for gathering at the end of active days. There are cabins for up to eight guests, and despite feeling remote, the resort is still within walking distance.

Dining, Drinking and Shopping

Need more reasons to stay at Kicking Horse Lodging in winter? Between hitting the slopes and recovering to get back out there, there are several dining and drinking options. The ski resort has many year-round restaurants, including Peaks Grill at the base and stunning Eagle’s Eye at the mountain peak. And Double Black serves some of the best coffee in town. However, ski season means two additional restaurants open: casual Whitetooth Grill and Western-themed Winston Bar and Bistro. Come for an evening game of life-sized Jenga and a drink!

You may also want to venture to nearby Golden for an evening to discover even more options. From fine dining in a mansion-like setting at Cedar House to margaritas and tacos at Reposados, there’s an option for every taste. Continue the night with cocktails, beers, and pizza at hipster Riverhouse Tavern or excellent brews at Whitetooth Brewing Company. So many spots to try!

Get Outdoors with Kicking Horse Fall Activities for Every Adventurer

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Kicking Horse Mountain and the nearby town of Golden transform into a kaleidoscope of changing colour and adventure as fall settles in. For adventurers seeking to immerse themselves in the area's natural beauty and experience activities that are both heart-pounding and relaxing, this is the perfect time to visit. Days are still fairly long, and the pleasant weather averages 15 °C (59 °F) through September and early October. Perhaps best of all, though, is the notable decrease in visitors. All of this combined means you can slow down and enjoy The Great Outdoors and all its bounty.

From hiking and biking to water activities and wildlife viewing, Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall offers a buffet of exhilarating experiences for every outdoor enthusiast. Let's dive into the best outdoor fall activities near Kicking Horse.

What Makes Fall So Great on the Mountain

As the summer heat gradually becomes a brisk chill, Kicking Horse Mountain unveils a spectacular display of changing foliage for the fall. The alpine forests blanket the slopes in an ever-transforming tapestry of golden orange and red, creating the perfect backdrop for breathtaking sunsets and photo ops. At the same time, mild weather and significantly fewer crowds beckon you to savour nature's tranquillity.

Water Activities

Most people associate water recreation with the summer months — which is precisely why it's one of the best outdoor fall activities near Kicking Horse. The pristine waters surrounding the mountain, from the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers to half a dozen sparkling alpine lakes within an hour's drive, are ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and fishing. Early autumn is a fantastic time to take in the gorgeous scenery from the water because it won’t be too cold (with the bonus of the fall foliage showing off!).

As part of our Stay® | Well amenities, Kicking Horse Lodging offers SUP rentals for DIY adventures, and a handful of local outfitters offer guided tours and kayak rentals. You don't need to bring anything but yourself. Check with Alpine Rafting and Golden River Adventures for half- and full-day kayak rentals through early September or The Golden Gillie for guided fishing trips through October.

Take a Hike and Enjoy the Changing Leaves

Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall means prime hiking season, and there's an impressive array of trails for all skill levels. There's the option to head into Yoho or Glacier National Park, but with so many great local hikes, there's truthfully no need. We've listed a few of the most popular hikes on the mountain, but for a complete resource to all area trails, check out GoldenHikes.

For an easygoing local adventure, try Cedar Lakes, Dogtooth Ridge, or CPR Ridge. Those seeking more of a challenge should head to T2 Peak, a short but thrilling hike with rewarding panoramic views at the summit. Alternatively, the 3.3-km one-way hike to turquoise Gorman Lake is one of the area's best SUP lakes. Before heading out, check with the front desk, as Kicking Horse Lodging guests have access to trekking poles, national park passes, bear bells, binoculars, and even child hiking carriers.

Note that trail runners primarily train during the fall, and the Golden Ultra comes to town every September. Keep your eyes and ears open for runners (and cyclists!), and practice good trail etiquette by yielding to let them pass.

Scenic Bike Trails

Prefer to explore trails on two wheels? Fall on Kicking Horse is an excellent time to do so, with near-perfect weather and less crowded trails. On the whole, Golden has 185 km of trails, which are often praised as some of North America's best mountain biking terrain for all skill levels. On the resort itself, explore a range of exhilarating downhill and cross-country trails, including the lift-assisted downhill park, open weekends through September.

The best thing about mountain biking here in the fall is that the uncrowded trails allow you to hone — or practice — your skills. Spend your days enjoying the trails' mixed terrain, technical sections, and lack of lift lines, all complemented by breathtaking views.

Wildlife Viewing

One of the highlights of Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall is the abundance of wildlife. Quieter trails and cooler temperatures present more opportunities to spot some of the area's furry residents, including deer, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, mountain lions, and the occasional bear (both black and grizzly).

Look out for signs of wildlife, particularly on trails and near water, and maintain a safe distance. Banff or Golden? Top 5 Reasons You Should Stay in Golden, BC

You’re planning a vacation to the beautiful Canadian Rockies and aren’t sure where you should stay. Golden or Banff? These visually stunning locations offer more than a few things to see and do for a complete vacation experience.

While these destinations are unique in their own ways, they provide many different benefits. If you’re unsure if Banff is the spot for you, read on to learn why you should choose Golden over Banff as your base for exploration and adventure.

Banff vs. Golden

Situated in the Rockies, Banff and Golden are top spots for tourism and outdoor recreation. You’ll find quite a few similarities between both since they share similar geography, but a few differences make Golden a top contender against Banff.

Why Visit Banff?

There is no denying that Banff is a beautiful destination where many travellers head year-round. The resort town within Banff National Park is known for its hot springs and scenic views of Mt. Cascade and Mt. Rundle. Hiking, biking, water activities, wildlife observation, historic sites, and a museum are just a few things to do within the park.

The town and surrounding park are one of the most visited destinations in Canada. This includes Canadian travellers, visitors from the United States, and significant international tourists worldwide. Millions of tourists plan to visit and stay in the national park yearly.

The park covers more than 6,600 square kilometres with endless opportunities for outdoor adventuring but the town is ideal for tourists with no shortage of restaurants, boutiques, retail shops, and hotels, which creates a busy, non-stop environment.

Why Stay in Golden, BC?

If you’re hoping to avoid crowds while staying at an ideally located spot near the top attractions in the Canadian Rockies, Golden is the place to be.

The town is big on charm and a friendly atmosphere but small in the hustle, bustle, noise, and crowds that larger destinations experience. Nestled along the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers, Golden is a paradise for travellers looking to relax and enjoy beautiful settings.

Along with access to various local attractions, adventures are unlimited in the six nearby national parks. These include Banff, Kootenay, Yoho, Glacier, Mount Revelstoke, and Jasper for rafting, biking, hiking, and canoeing.

Golden is also convenient to nearby towns and villages, such as Canmore, Radium Hot Springs, Kimberley, Kananaskis, Lake Louise, Field, Invermere, and Revelstoke.

Maintaining small-town charm while blending a vibrant vibe and modern conveniences sets Golden apart – you won’t want to miss this gem.

5 Reasons to Stay in Golden, B.C. for Your Vacation

1. Enjoy Luxury While Staying Cost-Efficient

For visitors who wish to get the most out of their vacation time while minimizing overall costs, Golden may be a better option for you than Banff. Since Banff is a resort town that sees a regular influx of visitors, the price of food, lodging, and other activities tends to be higher.

Additionally, Banff accommodations book up quickly and far in advance, which can send prices skyrocketing even more. Staying in the Golden area can save you some cash without sacrificing quality. For a resort stay, choose Kicking Horse Lodging. The experience is 5-star, and the included amenities allow you to get local while saving money on national park entrance fees and some rentals.

2. Dining Options for Every Palate

Whatever your taste buds crave, there’s a restaurant in Golden that can satisfy you. The diverse selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner eateries can easily take you from casual to fine dining.

  • Whitetooth Grill – Offering a classic bistro menu, drink specials, and mountain views from the rooftop patio, you can enjoy this grill onsite during the ski season.

  • Eleven 22 – Since 1994, a creative food menu and assorted drinks have been served in an upscale atmosphere.

  • Red Tomato Pies Ltd. – Order a fresh-made pizza, salad, sides, and desserts for take-out or delivery.

  • Reposados – This spot offers tacos, an extensive margarita list, and great gluten-free and plant-based options in Golden's downtown.

  • Riverhouse Tavern – Inviting and casual atmosphere with outside seating, mountain views, and pool tables.

  • The Wolf's Den – Specializing in local, made-from-scratch Canadian fare with flare, this stop offers an informal atmosphere, patio seating, and live music.

The out-and-back trail is easy to access and offers a refreshing oasis, especially if you hike during the summer. The gravel path leads to the top of the falls, which spans the Kicking Horse River.

Knockout views and the cool mist from the falls will greet you upon arrival. To get to the riverbank, backtrack a little. Pick up the trail again and head straight there.
