Get Outdoors with Kicking Horse Fall Activities for Every Adventurer

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Kicking Horse Mountain and the nearby town of Golden transform into a kaleidoscope of changing colour and adventure as fall settles in. For adventurers seeking to immerse themselves in the area's natural beauty and experience activities that are both heart-pounding and relaxing, this is the perfect time to visit. Days are still fairly long, and the pleasant weather averages 15 °C (59 °F) through September and early October. Perhaps best of all, though, is the notable decrease in visitors. All of this combined means you can slow down and enjoy The Great Outdoors and all its bounty.

From hiking and biking to water activities and wildlife viewing, Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall offers a buffet of exhilarating experiences for every outdoor enthusiast. Let's dive into the best outdoor fall activities near Kicking Horse.

What Makes Fall So Great on the Mountain

As the summer heat gradually becomes a brisk chill, Kicking Horse Mountain unveils a spectacular display of changing foliage for the fall. The alpine forests blanket the slopes in an ever-transforming tapestry of golden orange and red, creating the perfect backdrop for breathtaking sunsets and photo ops. At the same time, mild weather and significantly fewer crowds beckon you to savour nature's tranquillity.

Water Activities

Most people associate water recreation with the summer months — which is precisely why it's one of the best outdoor fall activities near Kicking Horse. The pristine waters surrounding the mountain, from the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers to half a dozen sparkling alpine lakes within an hour's drive, are ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and fishing. Early autumn is a fantastic time to take in the gorgeous scenery from the water because it won’t be too cold (with the bonus of the fall foliage showing off!).

As part of our Stay® | Well amenities, Kicking Horse Lodging offers SUP rentals for DIY adventures, and a handful of local outfitters offer guided tours and kayak rentals. You don't need to bring anything but yourself. Check with Alpine Rafting and Golden River Adventures for half- and full-day kayak rentals through early September or The Golden Gillie for guided fishing trips through October.

Take a Hike and Enjoy the Changing Leaves

Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall means prime hiking season, and there's an impressive array of trails for all skill levels. There's the option to head into Yoho or Glacier National Park, but with so many great local hikes, there's truthfully no need. We've listed a few of the most popular hikes on the mountain, but for a complete resource to all area trails, check out GoldenHikes.

For an easygoing local adventure, try Cedar Lakes, Dogtooth Ridge, or CPR Ridge. Those seeking more of a challenge should head to T2 Peak, a short but thrilling hike with rewarding panoramic views at the summit. Alternatively, the 3.3-km one-way hike to turquoise Gorman Lake is one of the area's best SUP lakes. Before heading out, check with the front desk, as Kicking Horse Lodging guests have access to trekking poles, national park passes, bear bells, binoculars, and even child hiking carriers.

Note that trail runners primarily train during the fall, and the Golden Ultra comes to town every September. Keep your eyes and ears open for runners (and cyclists!), and practice good trail etiquette by yielding to let them pass.

Scenic Bike Trails

Prefer to explore trails on two wheels? Fall on Kicking Horse is an excellent time to do so, with near-perfect weather and less crowded trails. On the whole, Golden has 185 km of trails, which are often praised as some of North America's best mountain biking terrain for all skill levels. On the resort itself, explore a range of exhilarating downhill and cross-country trails, including the lift-assisted downhill park, open weekends through September.

The best thing about mountain biking here in the fall is that the uncrowded trails allow you to hone — or practice — your skills. Spend your days enjoying the trails' mixed terrain, technical sections, and lack of lift lines, all complemented by breathtaking views.

Wildlife Viewing

One of the highlights of Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall is the abundance of wildlife. Quieter trails and cooler temperatures present more opportunities to spot some of the area's furry residents, including deer, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, mountain lions, and the occasional bear (both black and grizzly).

Look out for signs of wildlife, particularly on trails and near water, and maintain a safe distance. Enjoying these majestic creatures in their natural environment is a favourite among outdoor fall activities near Kicking Horse, but it's important to remember that we humans are visiting their home.

If you prefer a more guaranteed wildlife sighting, check out the Grizzly Bear Refuge, home of Boo the Grizzly. The 20-acre natural habitat has an interpretive centre where visitors can safely observe Boo through the summer and into late September. Another option is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre, home to nine wolves and open year-round. Visitors can take a short interpretive tour or book a photography tour, where you can walk with the wolves.

Other Fall Activities Near Kicking Horse

We're not finished just yet — there are still other ways to experience Kicking Horse Mountain in the fall. One of the best is The Golden Skybridge, where you can walk across Canada's highest suspension bridges (426 feet off the ground!), ride an alpine coaster, go ziplining, or try axe-throwing. The Skybridge is open through the long Thanksgiving weekend in early October.
